    MAY - MIGHT





    Uses of May

    Polite Request: May I borrow your calculator

    Giving permission: You may leave the room.

    Possibility below 50%:

    He may be at library.

    He may have been at the library

    Possibility of doing something: Altering a passport in any way make it invalid.

    Possibility in the past: They may have called when she was in Los Angeles

    Suggestion that someone should do something because there is NO other choices: If there is nothing more to do, we may as well go to bed.




    Uses of might

    Possibility below 50%: He might be at the bank

    He might have been at the bank

    Possibility that something is true, but you cannot be certain:

    With the extra free time, they might do more volunteer work.

    Uses of Must

    Emphasis: I must go to class today

    Prohibition: You must not open that door.

    Certainty in the present 95%: John must be sick.

    Certainty in the past 95%: John must have been sick yesterday.



    Uses of "have to"

    Necessity:

    I have to go to class today

    I had to go to class yesterday.

    Lack of necessity:

    I don't have to go to class today.

    I didn't have to go to class yesterday

    Uses of Would

    Polite Request: Would you mind if I left early

    Preference: I would rather go to the TOEIC class than stay home

    I would rather have gone to the part.

    Past habit: When I was a child, I would visit my grandparents every weekend.

    Polite form of "want": I would like an apple, please.

    Unfulfilled wish: I would have liked a cookie, but there were none in the house.



    Uses of "used to"
    Past habit:

    I used to visit my grandparents every weekend.

    Past situation no longer in existence:

    I used to live in the United States. Now I live in Korea
